about

digital only single
exclusive, not on album
a soul-blues reinterpretation of Mississippi's own song duetted with Americana artist Kerri Watt

Quote from Mississippi about the single

“The idea for this song came unexpectedly, whilst I was watching a rerun of a Johnny Cash Christmas Special on TV. In amongst the good cheer, the choir, roaring fires and all the presents under trees, June turned to Johnny and gave him a warning. “Every dollar you earn”…she said slowly…”is another link in the Devil’s Chain”. You could see that she was sending him a serious message by the look in his eyes, and that’s when I reached for my pen and paper.”

lyrics

Mississippi Delta in the dead of night
Trying to catch the next train
Guitar player and Harmonica Joe
Move from Memphis to Maine

Every dollar you earn, is a link in the Devil’s chain
Every dollar you earn, is a link in the Devil’s chain

Big shot city in the heat of day,
10 to 5 through to 9
Subway train clean out of sight,
Broken down Cadillac assembly line

Every dollar you earn, is a link in the Devil’s chain
Every dollar you earn, is a link in the Devil’s chain

You better keep on walking on by
Don’t you turn your head
Say something to the other man
Theres nothing you could have said

Every dollar you earn, is a link in the Devil’s chain
Every dollar you earn, is a link in the Devil’s chain
